Why Does Your Accent Get “Stuck” as You Age?

A retired diplomat can be fluent in a language for forty years — read novels in it, argue politics in it, dream in it — and still get asked, within the first sentence, “where are you from originally?” Meanwhile a child who moved countries at age six speaks with no trace of an accent at all. Both people learned the language. Only one of them sounds like they were born into it. The gap between those two outcomes isn’t about effort, intelligence, or how long you study. It’s largely physical, and it comes down to what your mouth and brain were doing during the first several years of your life.

Your Articulators Get Trained Early — and Then Set

From roughly birth through early childhood, your brain is building the specific, fine-grained motor programs that control your tongue, lips, and jaw for producing speech sounds. This isn’t abstract knowledge — it’s physical muscle memory, laid down through thousands of hours of babbling, imitation, and correction, the same way a young gymnast’s body learns balance in a way an adult beginner’s body struggles to match.

By adolescence, those motor programs are largely set. Not frozen solid — adults can and do improve pronunciation with targeted practice — but no longer forming with the same ease. Learning a new language’s sounds as an adult means asking muscles that have spent two decades perfecting one set of movements to learn a genuinely different set from scratch, without the benefit of the flexible, rapidly wiring motor cortex a five-year-old has. It’s closer to an adult learning to switch their dominant hand than to learning a new fact.

The Critical Period Hypothesis

Linguist Eric Lenneberg proposed in the 1960s that there is a biological window — roughly from infancy through puberty — during which the brain is exceptionally well suited to acquiring native-like language, pronunciation included. Outside that window, the same input no longer produces the same result nearly as reliably. This is known as the critical period hypothesis, and while researchers still debate its exact edges and mechanisms, the core observational pattern behind it is remarkably consistent: study after study of people who immigrated at different ages shows accent “foreignness” climbing steadily the older someone was at first exposure, with the steepest change happening around puberty.

The leading physical explanation involves neuroplasticity — the brain’s capacity to form new neural connections — which is dramatically higher in early childhood and gradually decreases with age as the brain prunes unused pathways and strengthens the ones it relies on. A young child’s brain is, in a real sense, still deciding which sound categories matter. An adult’s brain has already decided, and reorganizing that decision takes real, effortful, sustained work rather than passive exposure.

It’s Not Just the Brain — It’s the Muscles Too

The neurological story gets most of the attention, but there’s a purely mechanical piece too. The vocal tract itself changes shape through childhood and adolescence as the larynx descends and the jaw and palate grow, and the fine motor control of the tongue continues developing throughout that same window. A child acquiring a language during this period is training brain and body together, in sync. An adult learning a new language is trying to retrain the motor half of that system after both halves have already matured and stabilized around a first language.

This is also why accent is stubborn in a way that vocabulary and grammar generally aren’t. You can consciously learn a grammar rule and apply it deliberately. You cannot consciously will your tongue into a new default resting position for an entire sound system — that requires the kind of repetitive physical retraining more familiar from sports or music than from a classroom.

Adults Aren’t Doomed — They’re Just Working a Harder Angle

None of this means adult language learners can’t achieve excellent, clearly intelligible pronunciation — many do. It means the mechanism is different and generally slower, and that a residual accent is a normal outcome of biology, not a sign of insufficient effort or a “bad ear.” Some adult learners do get remarkably close to native-sounding speech, and researchers who study them have found they tend to share specific habits: obsessive listening, phonetic self-correction, and a willingness to look a little ridiculous while practicing sounds out loud, repeatedly, long after the meaning is already understood.

What This Means for You

If your accent hasn’t disappeared after years of study, that isn’t evidence you’re bad at languages — it’s evidence you have a brain and a mouth that finished specializing in one language before you started learning a second one, which is true of almost every adult learner alive. The goal worth chasing isn’t erasing every trace of where you’re from. It’s clarity: being easily, comfortably understood. That’s genuinely achievable at any age, with the right kind of practice, even when a perfect accent isn’t.
